What is Pilates?
Pilates is a low-impact, full-body exercise method that focuses on strength, flexibility, posture, and control. Using breath, alignment, and precise movement, Pilates helps build core stability, improve mobility, and create long, lean muscles. It’s beneficial for everyone no matter the age, gender, body type, or current activity level.
I’ve never done Pilates before. Is this the right form of movement and exercise for me?
Absolutely. Pilates is highly adaptable and can be modified for any fitness level. It’s gentle on the joints, yet effective in building strength, balance, and body awareness. Beginners are always welcome.
Do you offer beginner classes?
Yes. We offer beginner-friendly classes designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of Pilates and proper equipment setup. Check our schedule for classes labeled Beginner.
What do I need to bring to class?
- Socks (mandatory): Grip socks are preferred, but regular socks are allowed while utilizing our sticky pads in studio. No bare feet or shoes.
- Water: Bring a bottle; refill stations are available.
- Attire: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing without zippers or sharp edges (these can damage equipment).
- Towel (optional): You’re welcome to bring your own, or use one of ours.
I’m in great shape. Will Pilates challenge me?
Yes! Pilates emphasizes precision and control, engaging muscles in ways many people aren’t used to. Even elite athletes are challenged by Pilates’ unique approach to strength and stability.
I’m pregnant. Can I still take class?
Yes. Pilates can be safe and effective during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor first, and notify your instructor before class so modifications can be provided.
Is there an age requirement to take class?
Yes. All clients must be 18 years or older.
What is parking like?
Street parking is available near both studios (please check signage for restrictions). Paid garages are also nearby:
- Shaw Studio: 1415 9th St NW, Washington, DC 20001
- Petworth Studio: 850 Quincy St NW, Washington, DC 20011
Both studios are also metro- and public transit-accessible, as well as conveniently located by a Capital Bikeshare dock.
Class Recommendations
How many days a week should I take class?
We recommend 2–3 classes per week for the best results, but the right amount depends on your goals, fitness level, and schedule. Even once a week will provide noticeable benefits when done consistently.
When will I start seeing results?
Many clients feel improvements in strength, posture, and energy within 10 sessions. More visible results often appear with consistent practice after 20–30 sessions.
What package of class credits is right for me?
This depends on your schedule and goals:
- New clients: Start with our $70 new client package so you can take 3 classes at a reduced price.
- 2–3 classes per week: We’d recommend the 10- or 20-pack of classes so you receive the sessions at the best rate. These packages also offer the most flexibility with their extended expiration window.
Contact us if you’d like guidance choosing the best option for your routine.
Do you offer muscle-specific classes?
No. Our classes are designed as full-body workouts, though instructors may focus on specific areas depending on the day’s programming.
What is the difference between an Instructor, Senior Instructor, and Lead Instructor?
Instructor – Instructors are the foundation of our teaching team. They are skilled, passionate teachers who bring energy, creativity, and a strong commitment to helping clients get the most out of every class.
Senior Instructor – Senior Instructors build on that same foundation with additional teaching experience, continuing education, and advanced certifications. They bring deeper expertise and refined teaching techniques to their classes.
Lead Instructor – Lead Instructors have all the experience of a Senior Instructor and also play a leadership role in the studio. They help guide programming, mentor newer teachers, and support the overall client experience.
Booking
How do I book classes?
You can book online at Mindbody.com or through the Mindbody app on your smartphone or tablet. (provide link to our store front on MB)
Can I book classes for other people?
Yes. You can link your account with another using the Family & Friend Sharing feature in Mindbody. This allows you to share payment options and class credits. How does the waitlist work?
- If a class is full, join the waitlist.
- If a spot opens up, everyone on the waitlist will be contacted and by text and the first to respond grabs the spot.
- If you no longer wish to attend, remove yourself from the waitlist.
- Once added, our normal cancellation policy applies.
- If you’re on multiple waitlists you may be contacted for more than one class. You will be responsible for all reservations you sign up for.
Do credits expire?
Yes. Class credits and packages have expiration dates, which are listed at the time of purchase. Please check your Mindbody account for specific expiration details.
Can I book more than one class to have one as a backup?
Yes, but please be mindful of our cancellation policy. If you hold multiple spots and don’t cancel in time, you will lose those credits.
Attendance & Cancellation Policies
What if I’m running late to class?
Arrive on time! If you’re not present within 5 minutes of class start, your spot may be given to a waitlist client. Doors are locked shortly after class begins. New clients will not be admitted after the 5-minute mark for safety reasons.
Will I lose my spot if I’m late?
Yes. If you’re not in the studio when class starts, you forfeit your spot and class credit.
What is your cancellation policy? Can I reschedule?
We operate under a strict 12-hour cancellation policy:
- Cancel or reschedule at least 12 hours before class to retain your credit.
- Cancellations within 12 hours or no-shows result in a lost credit.
- Clients who have been added from the waitlist must also adhere to this policy.
- All cancellations must be made through your Mindbody account.
What is the inclement weather policy?
Classes will continue unless the studio notifies you of a cancellation. Please check your email and Mindbody for updates.
