Getting Started

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact, full-body exercise method that focuses on strength, flexibility, posture, and control. Using breath, alignment, and precise movement, Pilates helps build core stability, improve mobility, and create long, lean muscles. It’s beneficial for everyone no matter the age, gender, body type, or current activity level.

I’ve never done Pilates before. Is this the right form of movement and exercise for me?

Absolutely. Pilates is highly adaptable and can be modified for any fitness level. It’s gentle on the joints, yet effective in building strength, balance, and body awareness. Beginners are always welcome.

Do you offer beginner classes?

Yes. We offer beginner-friendly classes designed to introduce you to the fundamentals of Pilates and proper equipment setup. Check our schedule for classes labeled Beginner.

What do I need to bring to class?

  • Socks (mandatory): Grip socks are preferred, but regular socks are allowed while utilizing our sticky pads in studio. No bare feet or shoes.
  • Water: Bring a bottle; refill stations are available.
  • Attire: Comfortable, form-fitting clothing without zippers or sharp edges (these can damage equipment).
  • Towel (optional): You’re welcome to bring your own, or use one of ours.

I’m in great shape. Will Pilates challenge me?

Yes! Pilates emphasizes precision and control, engaging muscles in ways many people aren’t used to. Even elite athletes are challenged by Pilates’ unique approach to strength and stability.

I’m pregnant. Can I still take class?

Yes. Pilates can be safe and effective during pregnancy. Please consult your doctor first, and notify your instructor before class so modifications can be provided.

Is there an age requirement to take class?

Yes. All clients must be 18 years or older.

What is parking like?

Street parking is available near both studios (please check signage for restrictions). Paid garages are also nearby:

  • Shaw Studio: 1415 9th St NW, Washington, DC 20001
  • Petworth Studio: 850 Quincy St NW, Washington, DC 20011

Both studios are also metro- and public transit-accessible, as well as conveniently located by a Capital Bikeshare dock.

Class Recommendations

How many days a week should I take class?

We recommend 2–3 classes per week for the best results, but the right amount depends on your goals, fitness level, and schedule. Even once a week will provide noticeable benefits when done consistently.

When will I start seeing results?

Many clients feel improvements in strength, posture, and energy within 10 sessions. More visible results often appear with consistent practice after 20–30 sessions.

What package of class credits is right for me?

This depends on your schedule and goals:

  • New clients: Start with our $70 new client package so you can take 3 classes at a reduced price.
  • 2–3 classes per week: We’d recommend the 10- or 20-pack of classes so you receive the sessions at the best rate. These packages also offer the most flexibility with their extended expiration window.

Contact us if you’d like guidance choosing the best option for your routine.

Do you offer muscle-specific classes?

No. Our classes are designed as full-body workouts, though instructors may focus on specific areas depending on the day’s programming.

What is the difference between an Instructor, Senior Instructor, and Lead Instructor?

Instructor – Instructors are the foundation of our teaching team. They are skilled, passionate teachers who bring energy, creativity, and a strong commitment to helping clients get the most out of every class.

Senior Instructor – Senior Instructors build on that same foundation with additional teaching experience, continuing education, and advanced certifications. They bring deeper expertise and refined teaching techniques to their classes.

Lead Instructor – Lead Instructors have all the experience of a Senior Instructor and also play a leadership role in the studio. They help guide programming, mentor newer teachers, and support the overall client experience.

Arrive on time! If you’re not present within 5 minutes of class start, your spot may be given to a waitlist client. Doors are locked shortly after class begins. New clients will not be admitted after the 5-minute mark for safety reasons.

Will I lose my spot if I’m late?

Yes. If you’re not in the studio when class starts, you forfeit your spot and class credit.

What is your cancellation policy? Can I reschedule?

We operate under a strict 12-hour cancellation policy:

What is the inclement weather policy?

Classes will continue unless the studio notifies you of a cancellation. Please check your email and Mindbody for updates.

Michelle first discovered Pilates in 2018 following a running injury that shifted decades of training. Her very first reformer class was at District Pilates, and she was immediately hooked on the precision and challenge of the practice. After more than five years as a dedicated client, she took the leap to the other side of the reformer and began teaching in April 2024 after completing teacher training with Bailey, the founder & owner of District Pilates.

Michelle loves experimenting with new moves—especially the tricky ones that require extra focus on cueing--like her favorite reformer exercise, short spine massage. She hopes that students leave her class feeling a little better and having enjoyed her music playlists, which she proudly says reflect her Gen X roots.

When she’s not in the studio, Michelle works as a commercial litigator in “Big Law” and serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Bar Association of DC. Outside of work and Pilates, she enjoys reading, Peloton workouts, cats, feminist activism, and cheering on her favorite teams at live sporting events.

From that very first class at District Pilates, she was hooked. With a background in ballet, Natalie is drawn to Pilates’ slow, controlled movements and loves guiding students to build strength through intention and focus. She designs her classes to deepen the mind-body connection and always offers options to modify or progress, making Pilates accessible to all. Her ultimate goal? To have you think of her later in the week—whether you’re feeling sore climbing the stairs, lifting your toddler with more ease, or catching better posture in the mirror.

Natalie currently teaches Saturday mornings in Petworth but will be taking a short maternity leave soon. At home, she and her husband share life with their two cats. Outside of Pilates, she enjoys reading classes with her book club, cooking elaborate dinners for friends, and crafting themed playlists to set the tone for her classes.
